A soldier she meets 48 hours before they declare their love. A few days later he leaves to tell his fiancee that they are to end their marriage but ends up getting married. The mother of him (Lee) sends a message to Francie saying she was sorry that her son was mean to pretend to love her.
In my personal opinion, this man just wanted to break her innocence of never being with a man alone. It is mentioned he wanted to make love to her before he left. She declined and said that when he came back they were to marry and forever love eachother.
