Jerusalem had all sorts of "gates" by which to enter and exit the city. This passage names a few of them. The names were simple enough, in that they were named after their function, generally.
In the NIV Bible, Nehemiah 2:13 goes this way: "...By night I went out through the Valley Gate toward the Jackal Wall and the Dung Gate, examining the walls of Jerusalem, which had been broken down, and its gates, which had been destroyed by fire."
A fair guess is that outside Jerusalem, through the Dung gate or "dung port" [hopefully at a reasonable distance downwind from the city]... one would probably have seen lots and lots of animal excrement. Someone was probably hired full-time to "flang dung" out of the city.
