After the war ended, Southerners who had been loyal to the Confedacy were banned from voting. The voters consisted of freed blacks, Northern carpetbaggers and scalawags and Southerners who were disloyal to the Southern government. The old political parties in the South disbanded and the newly formed Republicans swept the elections.
