Many troops in the US Civil War, had bayonets attached to the end of their muskets or rifles. This was a two edged sword of sorts that could be used during battles where soldiers were in close contact with each other. The Bayonet, created first in France, remained a weapon for decades after the US Civil War.
Both sides needed more soldiers because the civil war claimed many lives.
The state of Missouri had two governments and actively supported both sides during the Civil War. This caused conflict and battles within the state among it's residents.

There were two US Civil War battles at Bull Run. The Confederates won both. They were called the First Battle of Bull Run and the Second Battle of Bull Run. Both battles were in the same vicinity each other. These Union losses were embarrassing for the Union.

The first pitched battle was Manassas/Bull Run on July 21st 1861. It was significant because it showed both sides that they were nowhere near ready for operations. Nothing significant would happen until the following February, and no big battles until April.
