Early immigrants relied upon word of mouth in choosing a city to live in. They would go to a city where a family member or neighbor said was a good place to live. Immigrants had no cars to travel and public transportation wasn't developed yet. So they stayed where they were. Cities grew larger as more immigrants arrived. Everything needed was within walking distance.

Immigrants typically come to the United States looking for a better life by finding a good job to earn good money. The highest paying jobs are in business and industry, which are in urban areas. Many Eastern and Southern Europeans settled in large cities for this reason, to get a good job. In addition, this a period of industrialization for the United States, and the only open jobs were in industries.
