No, was ethnic in nature. Some churches or religions might have been involved on a local basis but it was Hutu versus Tutsi.

...or such is the academic and official claims. If you mean religion as in holy texts and other rituals, then no, religion didn't play a role. But churches certainly did. Hutu and Tutsi identities were not ethnic in nature, and ethnicity was introduced into Rwanda through the colonial administrators. Churches were complicit in this: they provided services of education and healthcare selectively, whereas the religion itself demanded otherwise, which caused ethnic tensions to grow. Hence, church is complicit in one of the root causes of genocide, as it followed the political agenda of the Belgian administrators instead of fulfilling its religious duties.

Hope this helps.

PS: and capturing it as Hutu vs. Tutsi is not healthy, as it was mostly Hutu vs. Hutu moderates and Tutsi. Also, Tutsi also committed crimes and atrocities, and such an answer belies this fact (while it must also be acknowledged that the crime of genocide was committed one-sidedly - as per the definition of the term - by Hutu).
