Nero was a Roman Emperor who enjoyed cruel man-killing games. People also were not different. Gladiators fought against animals and other captive slaves in the Arena and winners were paid in gold and losers given a decent burial. Gladiators valued their own lives and often played tricks to cheat Nero and save their skins. One such trick is the basis of this story set in the ancient Roman background. The story has three distinct stages.

Gladiator Marcus returns to barrack after a fierce sword-play with a Greek captive. He has got a deep wound on his hand. Dust and dirt from the Arena may cause infection, so he cauterises the wound by removing a red-hot iron rod from the burning coal pot and touching the wound with it, suffering the intense pain. Bandaging the wound, he falls onto his bed and reminisces the scene on the arena. Marcus and the Greek were playing the trick of one of them wearing a blood-filled pig's bladder under his shirt which would be pierced by the masked opponent spilling the blood. The winner, today it was Marcus, would get the gold and the victim would escape on the way to the burial spot. Later they would meet some place and share the gold. They took turns in wearing the pig's bladder.

Three days later when his fever has passed, Marcus leaves Rome and on the way the Greek emerges from behind a rock and demands his share of gold which was promptly given. He complains that he is left with no shirts which are not stained with pig's blood and therefore next time it would be Marcus' turn to wear the bladder in the arena. This sentence relieves the ever-present tension in the story, but considering the risk of lives involved, this needn't be considered as a joke.
