There really are TWO Oprys. The Ryman Auditorium, which served as the Opry from 1928 - 1974, is located in downtown Nashville. After the Opry moved to its current location, the Ryman remained vacant until the early 1990s, when Emmylou Harris staged a series of concerts there for her live album AT THE RYMAN. After the Emmylou Harris concerts, the Ryman was restored and has reopened as an intimate concert venue. The current Opry opened in 1974, and it is located in suburban Nashville, at 2804 Opryland Drive.

The Grand Ole Opry was started by a man named George Hay (1895-1968) who had formerly hosted WLS's National Barn Dance. When he started working at WSM in 1925, the show was known only as "WSM's Barn Dance." After WSM became a NBC affiliate his show followed a series called "Grand Opera." As the show began one day in December of 1927, Hay reportedly said "for the past hour we have been listening to music taken largely from Grand Opera, but from now on we will present 'The Grand Ole Opry.'"
