The Grand Ole Opry was started by a man named George Hay (1895-1968) who had formerly hosted WLS's National Barn Dance. When he started working at WSM in 1925, the show was known only as "WSM's Barn Dance." After WSM became a NBC affiliate his show followed a series called "Grand Opera." As the show began one day in December of 1927, Hay reportedly said "for the past hour we have been listening to music taken largely from Grand Opera, but from now on we will present 'The Grand Ole Opry.'" The name fit the informal, hometown style of the show and it stuck.

Is George Strait a member of the Grand Ole Opry?

Easy... a Artsit has to put on at least 100 shows a year AND sing at least once in the Grand Ole Opry and George never has. George Strait did appear on the Opry early in his career. When asked about becoming a member of the Opry, George said that he had never been asked. I really don't know if George would want to be in TN if it meant being away from his beloved Texas and family very long. I'm not sure about rules and regs on Opry member's quantity of performances. When was the last time member, Garth Brooks performed there?
