The Netherlands and Spain both provided covert support and after the Battle of Saratoga France entered an open Alliance that included about 10,000 French troops, Naval Infantry and Marines in support of the Patriots. France provided an open purse which put them into an economic crisis that brought on the French Revolution.
The outcome of the battle convinced France to militarily intervene in the conflict, supporting the Patriots.
France became the first foreign power to support the United States. France began supporting the US following The Battle of Saratoga. In 1771 following The Battle of Kings Mountain in South Carolina, The Netherlands and Spain joined the US against England. (At that point the Europeans thought the Americans had done the impossible.)
The patriots (American soldiers who supported the war) won the Battle of Trenton.
