During the American Civil War, numerous Union generals were, to President Lincoln's great dissatisfaction, indecisive. Just one of these was General George Meade, Union commander at the Battle of Gettysburg: while he successfully engineered the defense of Gettysburg (and had successes elsewhere during the war), he failed to act decisively after the Confederates' final attack was repulsed. He had the opportunity to inflict a crushing defeat on General Robert E. Lee's army; instead, he let Lee's forces escape to Virginia nearly unscathed.
Advantages of the Lexington and Concord battle for the American colonists included the element of surprise, home-field advantage, and the ability to disrupt British military supply lines. Disadvantages included being outnumbered and outgunned, lack of proper training, and limited resources. Despite these disadvantages, the colonists were able to inflict significant casualties on the British, boost morale, and gain momentum for the Revolutionary War.
On September 16, 1862, one day before the historic Battle of Antietam, Major General George B. McClellan lost his best opportunity to defeat General Lee's army in detail in Maryland. McClellan was slow to assemble his forces in and around the town of Sharpsburg, Maryland. McClellan was unaware that he substantially outnumbers Lee's army and postpones an attack on the Confederates. Instead he waits another day until his reserve forces joins his main army. Theoretically, if McClellan conducted an assault on September 16, the Battle of Antietam would have been a smashing Union victory.
