John 21:15-19, Jesus restores Peter to the chief of the Apostles role. Peter had denied Jesus 3 times as predicted and now Jesus would ask him 3 times if he loved Him. The contrasting of the word love is interesting as Jesus ask for 'agape' love (God-type of love) and Peter replies with 'filio' (brotherly human love). But what goes unnoticed are the words 'lambs' (called but not converted as yet) and sheep (converted into the Church). This surely bewildered Peter as Christ was speaking of his future ministry. Jesus ends by telling Peter of the price he will pay for this work - being bound and condemned as a criminal - going where he does not want to go. Truly, Christ shows His divine nature here and a price all Christians may be required to pay in this world.

In John chapter 21, Jesus asks this of Peter, contrasting ordinary, or brotherly, love with unconditional love. Unlike English, the Greek language of the New Testament has different words for different types of love, including agape(unconditional or sacred love) and philia (brotherly love).

The passage works well because it was written in Greek, but its meaning would be lost had it been spoken in Aramaic, just as the meaning is lost in English. Here, Jesus implied that the other disciples gave him unconditional love when he asked Peter, "Do you love (agape) me more than these (the other disciples)?" Each time, Peter answered that he loved Jesus, but each time he was only able to offer brotherly love (philia). And each time in exasperation, Jesus said, "Feed my sheep." With the meanings of sacred and brotherly love lost in the English translations, this last statement is usually interpreted as a sign of approval, quite the opposite of the original meaning.

Whom did Jesus choose to take care of the church?

In the Bible, the book of Acts Chapter 21 verse 17: The third time he (Jesus) said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my sheep." By these words Jesus both forgave Peter for his three denial of Him and told Peter to "Feed His sheep" or in other word "to take care of the church". Jesus chose Peter to care for His church.

How does Hebrews 13 describe brotherly love?

A:The Bible contrasts ordinary, or brotherly, love with unconditional love. Unlike English, the Greek language of the New Testament has different words for different types of love, including agape(unconditional or sacred love) and philia (brotherly love). There is a passage in John chapter 21 that works well because it was written in Greek, but its meaning would be lost had it been spoken in Aramaic, just as the meaning is lost in English. Here, Jesus implied that the other disciples gave him unconditional love when he asked Peter, "Do you love (agape) me more than these (the other disciples)?" Each time, Peter answered that he loved Jesus, but each time he used the word for brotherly love (philia).A:Although the ideas of brotherly love (philia) and unconditional love (agape) are universal, the words are uniquely Greek and can not adequately be expressed in, for example, Aramaic, Hebrew or English. Brotherly love is contrasted with unconditional love in John chapter 21, where the contrast works well because it was written in Greek. In this chapter, on the Sea of Galilee, the risen Jesus questioned Peter three times, just as Peter had previously denied Jesus three times. Jesus addressed him each time theatrically as "Simon, son of Jonah", not as Peter, the name always previously used by Jesus. It was as if the scene was designed to humiliate Peter in front of the other disciples. The first time, Jesus asked , "Do you love (agape) me more than these [the other disciples]?" Peter answered that he loves him, but only using the Greek word for friendly or brotherly love (philia). In exasperation, Jesus said, "Feed my sheep." With the meanings of sacred and brotherly love lost in the English translations, this last statement is usually interpreted as a sign of approval, quite the opposite of the original meaning.Jesus again asked Peter, "Do you love me?" Again, sacred love (agape), but this time did not ask whether Peter loved Jesus more than the others. And again, Peter replied with the Greek word for brotherly love (philia). In the third questioning, Jesus asked only whether Peter had brotherly love for him (philia). He accepted that this was the most that Peter would give.

When did Jesus wash the feet of the disciples?

A:The gospels say that after the arrest of Jesus, Peter denied him three times. In the synoptic gospels (Matthew, MarkandLuke) Jesus does not have any further contact with Peter and so is not able to forgive him.A passage in John's Gospel is widely seen as demonstrating that Jesus forgave Peter. At chapter 21, the risen Jesus questioned Peter three times, just as Peter had previously denied Jesus three times. The first time, Jesus asked , "Do you love (agape) me more than these (the other disciples)?" Peter answered that he loves him, but only using the Greek word for friendly or brotherly love (philia). In exasperation, Jesus said, "Feed my sheep." Jesus again asked Peter, "Do you love me?" Again, sacred love (agape), but this time did not ask whether Peter loved Jesus more than the others. And again, Peter replied with the Greek word for brotherly love (philia). In the third questioning, Jesus asked only whether Peter had brotherly love for him (philia). He accepted that this was the most that Peter would give. The Greek distinction of sacred love (agape) and brotherly love (philia) could not be translated into Latin and so the meaning was lost for the western church, as it also is in English translations. The western church interpreted the statement, "feed my sheep" as a sign of approval, quite the opposite of what was originally intended. The author of John's Gospel wanted to portray Jesus as giving Peter the opportunity to make amends, but Peter was unable to do so.

Where is 'philia' type of love in the Bible?

Brotherly love. The U.S. city of Philadelphia means 'city of brotherly love.' Peter used 'phileo' in his responses to Jesus in John 21 when Christ asked 3 times if he loved Him.

Did Jesus love Peter?

This episode is to be found in John's Gospel, which says that the risen Jesus questioned Peter three times by the Sea of Galilee, just as Peter had previously denied Jesus three times. Jesus addressed him each time theatrically as "Simon, son of Jonah", not as Peter, the name always previously used by Jesus.John Carroll (The Existential Jesus) says that it was as if the scene was designed to humiliate Peter in front of the other disciples. He goes on to explain why Jesus asked Peter this question three times, although with subtle differences:The first time, Jesus asked about unconditional love (Greek: agape) and the question was comparative: "Do you love me more than these [the other disciples]?" Peter answered that he loves him, but only using the Greek word for friendly or brotherly love (philia). Not satisfied, Jesus again asked Peter, "Do you love me?" Again, Jesus asked about sacred love (agape) but this time did not ask whether Peter loved Jesus more than the others. Again, Peter replied with the Greek word for brotherly love (philia). In the third questioning, Jesus asked only whether Peter had brotherly love for him (philia). He accepted that this was the most that Peter would give. Peter was upset that it has been necessary to ask him three times. The subtext is that what really upset him was that his love was confirmed as less than unconditional.

Who were the sheep Jesus was calling Peter to care for?

A:There is a passage in John chapter 21 that has Jesus say "Feed my sheep" to Peter. This works well because it was written in Greek, but its meaning is entirely lost in the English language because it can not be translated accurately from Greek. Its meaning would also be lost had it been spoken in Aramaic, just as in English. This is a play on words, taking advantage of the Greek language having different words for different types of love, including agape(unconditional or sacred love) and philia (brotherly love). When understood in this way, we realise that "Feed my sheep" was a sign of exasperation and does not refer to real or allegorical sheep.

Was John the closest to Christ in the Bible?

I wouldn't say that as Peter and James were held prominently as well. It appears John was the youngest and therefore received more 'tender' love from Jesus than the others recorded in the Bible.

How and why do christians respond to social injustice?

The Bible commends Christians to respond in love to social injustice. Jesus spoke to his disciples about this very thing in the 25th chapter of the book of Matthew.
