Islam, as the organized religion, began in Medina, because the people of Mecca rejected Mohammad when he first went to them.
After Mohammad had gained a large following, in Medina, he then returned to Mecca and conquered the city and forced the conversion of the population. That is where and how the religious form of Islam began.
But in the terminological sense Islam is an action of obedience and surrender to Gods will (in Arabic Allah = God, but this did not occur till after Mohammad conquered Mecca; so it would have begun the first time a person surrendered to Gods will. Muslims say it was Adam the first man, so it would have been in Eden the garden (not a city) of God where Islam began.

∙ 12y agoIslam started in mecca. but mecca political leaders sensed danger to lose their power by growth of Islam so banned it and bothered prophet and made sanctions against Muslims and they were under high pressure. they could not even buy food. so they secretly immigrated from mecca to Medina and they founded the Islam more freely.

All the Prophets (May peace be upon them all) had been teaching/preaching Islam. The last prophet of Islam Hazrat Muhammad (May peace be upon him) was born in Mecca, Arabia, in 570 AD. The country is now known as The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He started preaching Islam in 610 when he was 40. Islam teaches universal human brotherhood and equality of all human beings irrespective of caste, creed, color and country. It is the favorite religion of Almighty God. It for all human beings.
