The first true machinegun to see use in the 1st World War was the British Maxim Gun, invented by Hiram Maxim, an American-born inventor who immigrated to the United Kingdom. Rapid-firing firearms existed prior to World War 1, the Gatling Gun introduced in the US Civil War is one example. The Maxim Gun however was the first true machinegun as it was the first self-powered gun to operate in rapid succession. All pervious rapid-firing firearms required action on the part of the user, unlike the Maxim Gun which operated its action by harnessing the recoil of the previously-fired cartridge. Thus the British Empire is the country which first 'created' a machinegun and implimented them in the span of the 1st World War.
