∙ 14y agoIn the epic poem "Beowulf" (Beowulf is not a novel, despite the minute differences between epic poem and novel), Grendel is used to epitomize evil. He is a descendant of Cain, and is a demonic presence in the novel. The Christian author, one of three voices in each Beowulf translation, uses Grendel as a parallel to the devil, incapable of goodness and damned from birth, and does this in order to universalize Grendel's evil to all evil.
However, the Grendel presented in "Grendel" is completely different. He is given human emotions, and is presented as an outcast of society. He is expressed as capable of doing good, yet he chooses evil, because of the unforgiving society in which he lives, and which refuses obstinately to understand him.
The main reason for this difference lies in the differing messages the authors of these works want to emphasize. In order for the author(s) of Beowulf to emphasize the theme of the endless cycle of vengeance, he (they) needs to begin the novel with a force that senselessly attacks a civilization, and in this case he chooses a dehumanized monster, Grendel. However, Gardner wants to explore what would make Grendel turn into the evil monster he is in "Grendel", and thereby creates this rational, hurt, human-like creature in place of the traditional Grendel figure.
