You're probably referring to Cornwallis' surrender to the Americans at Yorktown, VA in October 1781, which led to the beginning of peace negotiations. However, fighting continued for almost a year after that.

Both the American Civil War and the American Revolutionary War ended in Virginia. Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown VA in 1781 and Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House VA in 1865.
Cornwallis's army was trapped at Yorktown, Va and was waiting for the British navy to save them. The French destroyed this naval force thereby leaving him no other option but to surrender.
