* Germany's first gas attack was in October of 1914, was ineffective and hardly noted. * Its first effective use was on 3 January 1915 against Russia. * The first use of gas in warfare was made by the French using tear gas without effect and little notice in August of 1914. * It required serious experimentation by both sides before it became a battlefield weapon, but improvement came with lethal effect.
Although Germany is generally conceived as the first country to use gas warfare, the French used tear gas in 1914 during WWI. After extensive study, Germany made a comeback by using mustard gas, among other lethal gases.
Separation of what? If it is the separation of East/West Germany then it is because gas masks were used in Gas Warfare, which was used in WWI and WWII.
Gas was first used in warfare during the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915 by the Germans.
Mustard Gas was introduced into warfare in September of 1917.

I think it was when Hitler was killing the Jewish people by putting them in gas rooms that could very well be the answer but might not. Second Answer: Germans first used chemicals in warfare in World War 1 when they developed mustard gas and tear gas. The mustard gas was the equivalent of mixing bleach and amonia together. They continued the use of chemical warfare in World War 2 on the Jews and people they considered undesireable.
Germany
The first large scale and successful use of poison gas was at the Second Battle of Ypres. Germany released chlorine gas in a light wind that took it into trenches controlled by French forces, causing them to flee. Canadian forces filled in the gap created and counterattacked through further gas attacks, eventually winning the battle.
Germany harnessed chemical warfare first during WWI. They started with bromine gas (which failed because it froze during the harsh winter months of the war), and then they moved to chlorine gas (which failed at first because they used it on a windy day - it blew back and killed more of their own soldiers).
Germany introduced mustard gas, and they were also the first ones to use it.
