My first pet gerbil was in 1974. Did anyone have one before that?
chinchilas are the cooliest
Yes. I have a friend and she has gerbils that are over one year old. They have had babies. In a gerbils lifespan gerbils have around 15 litters of babies.
There is no specific year. Just as there is no year for when dogs became pets. People simply began keeping domestic animals and treating them as pets.
up to 50 babies!
1833 was the first year that Chicago became a town

There's a variety of scenarios. First and foremost, make sure they have the proper diet and plenty of fresh water. Also make sure you are using the proper bedding-- don't use pine or cedar bedding, which can cause respiratory problems in the gerbil and can kill them. Another biggie with gerbils is Wet Tail-- an extremely contagious disease caused mostly by dirty cages, but can also be cause by stress. Gerbils are social creatures and not only need compatible partners, but need to be kept active. If they lack this, they'll become depressed and grow sick. Gerbils with Wet Tail have symptoms varying from a mix of lethargy, diarrhea, and red gunk coming from their eyes. There's medicine available at pet stores to treat this, but the gerbil will need to be force-feed this medicine and watched around the clock. Wet Tail is extremely lethal and needs to be acted on when the first symptoms are noticed. Please re-evaluate your standards for raising these gerbils-- with five dead in a year, it's obvious that you are doing something wrong. Check online for more tips on raising gerbils and don't be afraid to ask questions.
Gerbils can have a litter about every 5 weeks. Gerbils mate right after the birth of a litter, and the mother can prolong the pregnancy to up to 40 days if she is nursing. A gerbil will produce about 4-5 pups on average per litter, but can have up to 12! With about 10 litters per year with no break, that means about 50 gerbil pups a year! They are rather prolific breeders. :]
when did wheelchair curling become a sport?
Yes. They are easy to look after, and a good pet to give a child some responsibility. Remember though, they will give a nip from time to time, so the more you handle them, the tamer they will become.
