1885 in Waco, Texas. Dr. Pepper got it's name because someone had done a survey during the previous years that said a Doctor recommends that you get or that most people need a "Pepper Upper" (something that got you moving faster and made you feel good) at the hours of 10, 2, & 4.
So since the Dr. ordered a Pepper Upper they just took on the name of Dr. Pepper. The success of Dr. Pepper inspired Coca Cola to enter the market of the soft drinks or drinks without alcohol. Alcohol was known as a hard drink, because it was hard to stand the smell, hard to drink, and hard to keep down (without throwing up).
