The modern day history of Jehovah's Witnesses began in 1870; from the very beginning they were organized and more than just individuals with a shared a common theology dispersed among various Christian denominations.

Charles Russell originally formed an independent bible study group that grew to about 30 individuals. After a short association with Millenialist Adventist Nelson Barbour, Russell began publishing "Zions Watchtower" in July 1879.

The readers of this magazine disassociated themselves from the mainstream churches and formed congregations or local groups. They became known as "the bible students" who met together regularly and held larger conventions where new members were baptised. In 1994 travelling representatives called "pilgrims" began to be sent to assist these congregational groups and about that time Russell published books containing his biblical research.

From their early days the "bible students" shared what they were learning with others. The Watchtower of July 1881 reminded its readers of the Christian "Great Commission" to preach the gospel and invited its readers to participate in various preaching campaigns. Russell himself travelled extensively conducting preaching tours both in the United States and later (espectially between 1909-12) worldwide.

By 1914, there were 5000 bible students preaching in 60 lands. Their work was directed from their headquarters, known as "Bethel" which had moved from Pensyvanida to Brooklyn New York in 1908.

.

After the death of Russell in 1916 under the direction of JF Rutherford move emphasis was put on the preaching work. The name "Jehovah's Witnesses" Was adopted in 1931

Why do Jehovah's Witnesses believe that the Watchtower is God's organisation?

Jehovah's Witness do not believe that 'the Watchtower' is God's organization. The word Watchtower is just part of the name of the legal entity which Jehovah's Witnesses use so that they can legally engage in the publication and printing of Bible literature. We live in countries which have laws regarding property ownership, taxes and publication. In order to print materials, we need to purchase paper, ink, binding material, shipping boxes and vehicles. This all requires business transactions, and these transactions have to be carried out in keeping with prevailing law. At the level of publishing and printing that we engage in, the legal entity is necessary. We are known formally as 'Watchtower Bible & Tract Society' of NY, or Pennsylvania, or London, and there are many other branches. The word 'Watchtower' is also the name of one of our regular publications.Organizations are made up of people. The people then give themselves an identity based on the organization's founding principles and mission. Many people in religious organizations call themselves Christian, and within that broad category there are other groups that identify as Roman Catholic, Baptist, Pentecostal, etc.The individuals who have formed the legal entity known as Watchtower Bible & Tract Society have given themselves the identity of 'Jehovah's Witnesses'.But the Jehovah's Witnesses don't dedicate themselves to The Watchtower or to any group of people. We dedicate ourselves directly to Jehovah God in private personal prayer. We are witnesses who belong to Jehovah God (Jehovah's Witnesses) and we dedicate ourselves to Him.We gather together in groups called congregations, a word also used by other Christian groups. Our main purpose for gathering in groups is to go out into the public, to witness. This takes some organization on our part. Certainly no one wants all the members of a congregation to come together as one group when visiting houses in the community. So we assign territories. This requires organization that involves the drawing of maps, charting group progress, and occasional reassignment in order to distribute tasks equitably. This is simply one example of how we organize in order to serve Jehovah, to bear witness to Jehovah's purposes and requirements for mankind.Of course we believe that we are God's organized people; that's why we call ourselves 'Jehovah's (God's) Witnesses'. Many other religions do similar things. They call themselves Christ's people, or Christians.
