Usually when extra gears are added to a transmission, one of the goals is to tighten up the range spread, to lessen the rpm drop between gears, and to add options in the shift schedule to keep the engine in its most efficient range. All these things help to make a vehicle more responsive and car like. The other is to add another overdrive ratio to slow the engine down at highway speeds.
