Memorial Day was not declared the official name by Federal law until 1967. On June 28, 1968, the United States Congress passed the Uniform Holidays Bill, which moved three holidays from their traditional dates to a specified Monday in order to create a convenient three-day weekend. The holidays included Washington's Birthday, now celebrated as Presidents' Day; Veterans Day, and Memorial Day. The change moved Memorial Day from its traditional May 30 date to the last Monday in May. The law took effect at the federal level in 1971

The Uniform Monday Holidays Act, which changed the observance of Washington's birthday from February 22 to the 3rd Monday of February (which never falls on the 22nd), Memorial Day from May 30 to the last Monday of May, Columbus Day from October 12 to the 2nd Monday of October, and Veterans Day from November 11 to the 4th Monday of October, took effect in 1971. Due to public outcry, Veterans Day was restored to November 11 in 1978.

Why is Memorial Day no longer May 30th?

In 1968 the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed by Congress and signed by President Lyndon Banes Johnson. This legislation moved several holidays from their traditional dates to a Monday to give federal workers three-day weekends. Memorial Day was one of those holidays and it was moved from May 30th to the last Monday in May. Sometimes the last Monday in May is the 30th, however. The next time that will be is in the year 2016.

What date does Memorial Day 2008 land on?

What day of the week was Memorial Day 1960?

In the USA it was on Monday the 30th of May, 1960.

Why did they move Memorial Day?

The Uniform Monday Holiday Bill was enacted in 1968 to make several three-day weekends for federal employees by moving certain holidays from their original date to a Monday. It went into effect in 1971. Memorial Day was one of the holidays so affected and the date of its observation was moved from May 30th to the last Monday in May, whatever date that is.

When was Memorial Day in 1962?

Memorial Day is a Federal Holiday. The date is set as the last Monday in May. For 1962 that would be the 30th of May.

What was the date of Memorial Day in 1967?

No! From 1868 to 1970 (that is 103 years) Memorial Day (originally called Decoration Day) was always May 30th no matter which day of the week that was. In 1971 Memorial Day was moved to the last Monday in May so the day number changes every year.

When is Memorial Day every year and why is it on that date?

Currently Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May. It was a holiday included in the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill enacted and signed in 1968, becoming effective January 1, 1971. There currently is a movement to restore Memorial Day to its traditional date of May 30th.

What day of the week was Memorial Day of 1968?

Memorial Day has been celebrated on the last Monday of May since 1971. Before that it was always celebrated on May 30th. May 30, 1960 fell on a Monday.

Was Memorial Day ever May 30th?

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and was first observed on May 30, 1868. It was observed on that day of the year (May 30) for 103 years - until 1970. In 1971 the Uniform Monday Holiday Act went into effect moving Memorial Day, and several other holidays, from their traditional dates to Mondays to enable government workers to have three-day weekends during the year. Since 1971 Memorial Day has been on the last Monday of May so the date of the month changes every year. The last time that May 30th was on a Monday was in the year 2011 and the next time that May 30th will be on a Monday will be in the year 2016.

Why is Memorial Day celebrated on a different day than it was on?

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. It was first observed on May 30, 1868. It was officially renamed to Memorial Day in May of 1967 and was observed on May 30th of every year until 1970 (for 102 years.) On January 1, 1971 the Uniform Monday Holiday Act (passed by Congress and signed by President Lyndon Banes Johnson in 1968) went into effect moving the holiday from May 30th to the last Monday in May. This bill moved several holidays from their traditional dates to a Monday so as to give federal employees some three-day weekends during the year.

What day of the week is Memorial Day?

It depends upon which year for which you are asking. Memorial day is always on the last Monday in May, which means it changes year to year rather than having the same set date every year.
