In 1908 the US Attorney General organized a formal Bureau of Investigation (BOI or BI), complete with its own staff of special agents to deal with crimes involving interstate commerce. At the time it was considered part of the Secret Service within the Justice Department. In 1932, it was renamed the United States Bureau of Investigation. The following year (1933) it started working with the Bureau of Prohibition to enforce prohibition and renamed the Division of Investigation (DOI). Finally in 1935 it became its own independent service and took on its current name - Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
