In the UK, the analogue TV transmission is being phased out; the first area was turned off this year and the whole of the UK will be entirely digital by the end of 2012. Despite this, analogue only TVs are still sold. This isn't as short sighted as may first appear - digital TV is often received via external receiver boxes; in fact there is a lot to be said for external receivers as it means that as new technologies are introduced (such as PVR, Freesat and the upcoming HD DTT service) it doesn't require a new TV to be purchased.
