Are there any firewalls on the network. A lot of people configure firewalls in weird ways, leading to some strange network behaviour. Could be that you have a firewall blocking all your outgoing icmp, thus explaining the lack of ping success, but success with ipconfig /renew.
Check your local system's firewall for blocking of ICMP (ping) traffic.
Windows: Start - Run - "cmd" ipconfig /all Standard Gateway: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
If on Windows: Start, Run..., Type cmd and clikc OK Then type ipconfig, and there will be written Gateway on one of the lines. -NDR

Depending on what operating system you have - if it is a Windows system then use the 'ipconfig /all' command. Look for the 'default gateway' address. This is the address to your internet. For Unix based systems, use the 'ifconfig -a' command and/or netstat command to get the same info.
