Authoritarian states have powerful central governments which impose harsh penalties (often death, also imprisonment and torture) on people who do not obey their orders or who seek to oppose their rule in any way; they restrict freedom of speech, and they do not have free elections. Sometimes they have fake elections, in which the outcome is pre-determined. The recent election in Iran is a good example.
