The influence the rise of India's early civilization is that t hey grew up near the Indus River, when it floods it leaves behind silt, a rich, fertile soil. Then the farmers use the silt to grow crops, which fed their family. When the family didn't have worry about getting food they spend their time making tools, building houses or making other stuff. When they have extra food and goods left they traded with other people and their wealth grew. Then they were able to build a larger cities.
The most common one was the Egyptian's.
Amsterdam gets its name from a "dam" in the river "amstel" (this river runs right true Amsterdam.) At frist (700+ years ago) they called the city "amsteldam" that became Amsterdam. Ur welcome.

Babylonia never gained it position through wars of conquest. It more or less grew naturally when in the early days of civilization, villages grew into cities and cities co-operated and grew into lager units. Further unification came when in times of (usually defensive) wars these united again further when local kings who had proven themselves as succesful generals, managed to retain their position as overlord of this enlarged cluster of city-States. Its power in the eyes of outsiders grew as it showed itself effective in beating back any attempts of other tribes to invade and in chasing out any tribes who had temporarily succeeded.

A river gives the inhabitants a reliable source of water for drinking and agriculture. Additional benefits include fishing, fertile soil due to annual flooding, and ease of transportation. The first great civilizations all grew up in river valleys.
