English, like many other languages, has roots in Latin. Latin in turn has several words from Greek. For example, "gymnasium" comes from Latin "gymnasium", itself a latinization of Greek "gymnasion". Also, loanwords from Greek (and Latin) are quite common, and some words have survived. Many English words are formed by Greek words, and Greek gods have named weekdays and astral objects, though many of these use their Roman names. But most important Roman gods were copies of the Greek, just renamed. Examples are Mercury (Hermes), Venus (Aphrodite), Mars (Ares), Saturn (Greek god of the sky before Zeus), Jupiter (Zeus), Neptune (Poseidon) and Pluto, plus Saturday, after Saturn.

English has its roots in Olde German, the influence of Latin stems mainly from the Norman French and they didn't arrive in any great number before 1066.
The Romans were displaced by invasions from the Nordic countries (who created the kingdom of Danelaw - from which stems the Common Law tradition and democratic institutions), the Jutes from Jutland and the Angles and Saxons from what's now the Netherlands and Northern Germany - hence Anglo-Saxon.
The influence of Latin from the Roman occupation is limited. Most legionnaires and their slaves didn't know Latin, they used their mother tongue and the lingua franca of their homeland. For example those recruited from the Eastern Mediterranean colonies used languages such as Aramaic and the lingua franca of that region, which was Greek.
