Shield volcanes erupt runny lava, which normally has high temperature, low silica levels, and low gas levels. In some cases, the lava can have high gas levels, which creates a fire fountain. This is when the lava shoots up from the vent in the volcano creating a fountain-like figure. These volcanoes are wide, and have sloping sides because runny lava cannot easily build up. Hawaii is entirely made up of shield vocanoes.
