PindDaan in Hinduism is a ritual performed for elders who have passed away (expired)

Gaya is treated as auspicious place where any one can perform pinddaan for any one, normally pinddaam is done only by kith and kin and blood related but coming to gaya is an exception place and the ritual can be done by any one to any person deceased by naming the relationship in the shraddha mantra and normally the pinddaan is an offering to the deceased which is a ritual done depending on the caste and tradition every year depending on the thithi of the person deceased and few people who do not have children or offsprings or sons etc if their pinddaan is done in gaya once then their sole is released as per the Hindu tradition.

so doing a pinddaan in gaya is treated as very auspicious as well as release of the soul of the deceased and it is also assumed that the soul will not have a rebirth again.
