Macavity is the only protagonist in Cats. He kidnapped Demeter when she was a kitten and that is the reason behind her fear and deep dislike of him. She and Bombalurina speak of him in Macavity the Mystery Cat. He kidnaps Old Deuteronomy and returns him in the song Old Deuteronomy, this is his first appearance in the musical. There are several times when the Jellicle Cats are scared off by a loud clash that is said to be Macavity. The only time it is not Macavity is when the mischevious Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer come on to sing their song. He shows himself after the song Macavity the Mystery Cat disguised as Old Deuteronomy, but is unmasked by Demeter who seems to have a strong sense about him and his whereabouts. The Cats are frightened by him as he does a dance that suggests his power and evil. He then tries to take Demeter away but is then stopped by Munkustrap (who is Demeter's mate) and Alonzo. Munkustrap then fights with Macavity but is thrown to the ground after a long struggle to be comforted by the kittens and Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer. Alonzo then gets up and fights Macavity only to be thrown away. Mungojerrie has the same fate and is comforted by his mate Rumpleteazer. Munkustrap, Alonzo and Mungojerrie then lead the rest of the males and some of the older females to fight Macavity who then feels defeated but amused then jumps up onto a car and uses some jump cables to make a distraction for his escape. That is the last seen or heard of Macavity for the rest of the show.
