it was very bad it damaged lots of things like homes and cars but a lot of people
The worst earthquake to hit San Francisco to date was on 18 April 1906. It was estimated to be between 7.7 and 7.9 on the Richter scale. The effects of the earthquake ranged from Oregon to Los Angeles, and inland as far as central Nevada.
An unknown number of people died, but estimates suggest that between 3000 and 6000 were killed in the earthquake and its aftermath. Out of a population of about 400,000, between 225,000 and 300,000 people were left homeless.
A lot of damage was caused by the main earthquake and immediate aftershocks, but even more damage was caused by fires that burned out of control afterwards. These fires were so difficult to extinguish because damage to the water mains limited the fire-fighters' ability to put out the flames.
The overall cost of the damage from the earthquake was around $400,000,000. Interestingly, it was also the first time that images of earthquake devastation were captured on film.
The moment magnitude of the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco was estimated to be between 7.7 and 7.9 by the US Geological Survey.
Other unverified sources suggest the magnitude was 8.3.
Since there was no way of measuring earthquakes in 1906 we'll never know for sure. Experts have said it could have been anywhere from 7.7 to 8.3 magnitude though. Hope this helps. Source: United States Geological Survey.

well it does start kinda at the same time and kinda same damage
H. Reid, following after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake
It led to geological studies that have proven that the Andreas fault line is certain to cause periodic earthquakes such as the one in San Francisco in 1989. What it did was cause architects and engineers to build buildings that can withstand certain levels of earthquakes. Earth movements in California are common. No major earthquakes have happened in the last few decades. However, as in 1906, the earth has demonstrated that havoc can happen at any time in the future.
This is debatable, but the three worst earthquakes in the U.S. were likely the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, the Alaskan earthquake of 1964, and the New Madrid, Missouri earthquake, which was in the early 19th century.
