Texas longhorns were created in the 1800s when Spanish cattle and Anglo cattle were mixed to create a strong, long-horned cow that the Texans called by its horn, the Texas longhorn. Cattle is how many Texans got rich, for the demand for beef was high after the Civil War. Cattle were extremely cheap in Texas and expensive everywhere else, a perfect deal for Texans who wanted to sell for more but buy for less.
