In excel, right click on the column heading (top of the column) to the right of where you want to insert a new column, this brings up a mini drop down menu, click 'insert column'

A new column or row will always go where the active cell is, or in the place of the row(s)/Column(s) selected. So if you want to put a column between column E and column F, the new column will be where column F now is, so you select column F, or put the active cell in it. It is better to have it selected. To do that, either click on the heading of the column, of with the active cell in the column, press and hold the Ctrl key and press the spacebar.
Select columns, E, F and G. You can do that by going to the column header for column E and when you see a black arrow pointing down, then drag across to select the other two columns. Then right click, and click Insert. What was column E will now be column H and there will be three new columns between it and column D.

Double click on between the heading for column F and column G. When you put the cursor there, it will change to a bar with arrows to the left and to the right.

Select the column or columns where you would like the new column to appear. So if you wanted to insert a column between column A and B, then the new column will be where column B currently is. By clicking on the top of the column, where the B is, the column will be selected. You could also press and hold the Ctrl key and then press the space bar. Then go to the Insert Menu and pick columns, or right click on the mouse and pick Insert. Your new column will be inserted.
