The first practical true helicopter was developed by Igor Sikorsky (naturalized White Russian) about l940 or 4l. they had minimal use in the conflict as they were pre-occupied with getting the technical bugs out. There were a very few used by the Navy very late in the war as air-sea rescue craft for ditched carrier crews! They were ideally suited to this role.-and still are. There were other helicopters such as that of Paul Cornu (French) in l907, Breguet (better known for conventional aircraft and watches) and such composites as the compound autogyro which was flown inside a stadium by the German Aviatrix Hanna Reitsch in l933. this craft , which had counter-rotating rotors was not, strictly speaking, a helicopter but (Showed the way). Craft was the Focke-Aghelis FA6l as I recall and had the serial number D-EKRA . In early 1940's, Arthur Young demonstrated a remote-controlled flying helicopter to Arthur Bell, the owner of Bell Aircraft. Mr. Bell set aside a facility at Garden Grove, NY, to build a prototype based upon the model. This prototype became the Bell Model 30 and a commericial version called the Model 47 became the first commericial helipcopter built for private use.
