Though the phrase 'the word' appears many times often introducing the Lord, in John 1 verses 1-3, it is used as another name for Jesus prior to His human existence. In the Greek it is 'Logos' and it says it was through this God being all things were created. In Him, the Logos who became the Christ, was life which is the light for all mankind.
