There is no safe dose of Depakote (or of any other antipsychotic). These medications cause brain damage, and there is a serious risk of Tardive Diskinesia (a permanent movement disorder similar to Parkinsons) at any dose. Something like 20% of people who take antipsychotics eventually end up with this disorder, and it never goes away - they are crippled for life.
(*opinion follows*) It is immoral to give antipsychotics to children under 18. They are too young to weigh the risks and benefits and make an informed decision, and by the time they are old enough it may already be too late. Frankly, I think any psychiatrist who prescribes these drugs to kids should have their license revoked. You probably shouldn't be considering any kind of psychiatric medication unless your child has been in intensive counseling for a year without improvement.

My husband and I saw a specialist to ask about medications while trying to get pregnant and he suggested that Keppra was a good choice; while there are MANY studies that show a huge risk for women taking Depakote during pregnancy and conception.
