It's because there are 12 grades all together so they put K-6 in elementary school which is half, then they put 3 grades (7th 8th 9th) in middle school then 10th 11th 12th in high school because 3 plus 3 is 6 and 6 plus 6 is 12 and there's 12 all together!! hope i helped! :)
