Sorry, but an IQ of eighty is a below average IQ for anyone. IQ's are corrected for age, and for ALL ages of people the average IQ is 100.

80 is low normal. Forest Gump had an IQ of seventy five. 80 is slow and if the test was accurate (ie the kid wasn;t sick that day or there wasn;t a mistake in administering it, etc) the kid is not likely to be particularly bright. It depends also if the IQ was officially measured or if it was just some online or some other test...those ones in magazines are not so accurate!

UNLESS he has a learning disability. Some people have vastly different abilities in different kinds of cognative tasks...areas of huge weakness (say, verbal or spacial skills) can bring down the overall score. That should show up on the most sophisticated testing (administered by a psychologist)...which can be used to ferret out learning disabilities.

Its important not to label a child with a "low IQ"...kids with same IQ can ACHEIVE at different rates up to a point depending on how enriched their home environment and schooling is, as well as their temperment and other qualities.
