AOL, after many researching attempts, still advertises independently of AIM. If the two have indeed merged, AOL has ultimately swallowed AIM entirely.
Unlike Windows Live Messenger (now merged with Skype), creating custom emoticons is not a supported feature for AIM and you can only choose from a pallete of emoticons designed by AOL. There is one simple, inconvenient solution: copy and paste a static or animated emoticon into the chat window. (-_-;)

Another cost cutting messure to save AOL money while increasing your inability to have full service at the full price. The check status will be fully discontinued as was "unsend" and other services. AOL will not, nor has it ever, provided information to it's users about changes it is making, have made, will make. It's a gamble everyday and a hit and miss part of dealing with AOL. It may work today or it may not, whose knows and they don't care is a simple answer.
