Australia is not a state, it is a continent, country, but not an island either. This is possible due to the definition of island ;A piece of land surrounded by water but smaller than a continent. (referenced: www.dictionary.com), which if you look at Australia on a map it suits this description due to the surrounding water aspect but not the continent aspect due to Australia being politically considered a continent. Sometimes Australia is referred to as an island continent. Australia also is it's own country on it's own continent.
