Best Answer

Molecules experience dipole moments due to the difference in electronegativities between two chemically bonded atoms. Carbon has an electronegative value or 2.55 and oxygen has a value of 3.44, the difference between the two is 0.89, meaning the oxygen atom pulls electrons towards itself and away from the carbon atom with a dipole moment of 0.89. Carbon dioxide has two oxygen opposite each other pulling electron density towards themselves with the same force but in opposite directions. The vectors, being equal in magnitude but opposite in direction, perfectly cancel each other out and leave the overall dipole moment of carbon dioxide to be 0.

3.44-2.55 C-----O

Polar.

Carbon has an electronegativity of 2.5, and oxygen has an electronegativity of 3.5. Therefore, the electronegativity difference between them is 1, high enough to be considered polar covalent yet not quite high enough to be considered an ionic bond. Picture it this way, the oxygen desires the electrons at a level of 3.5, so in the bond tug of war, it is pulling the electrons with that much strength. The carbon likes electrons too so it is pulling with a strength of 2.5. Since the oxygen's desire is greater, the electrons are dwelling a bit closer to oxygen, giving O a slightly negative charge (pole) and leaving carbon with a slightly positive charge (pole).

Yes It has a structure in the form: O=C=O The molecule is straight as depicted and thus is symmetrical. It is therefore non-polar.

it is polar because the eN value of C is 2.5 and the eN value of O is 3.4, so 3.4-2.5= .9 which is a Polar bond eN value
