Sydney Cove, located in Port Jackson, New South Wales, was discovered by Captain Arthur Phillip, the first Governor of NSW. This site was first located by Phillip on 21 or 22 January 1788.Captain Arthur Phillip led the First Fleet of convicts and officers to New South Wales. The convict colony was supposed to be established at Botany Bay, which the First Fleet reached on 18 January 1788. Botany Bay had been recommended by Captain James Cook and famous botanist Sir Joseph Banks as suitable for settlement following Cook's successful voyage to the eastern coast of the Great South Land. However, upon reaching the location, Phillip determined that the bay was unsuitable for settlement, so he reconnoitred north to find a better site. He returned to lead the Fleet into Port Jackson, eight kilometres north, and the site where Sydney would be founded, on 26 January 1788.
