The word Carowinds is a cross between "Carolina" and "winds." "Carolina" means the Carolinas, and "winds" is for the winds that blew across the states.

In the code name, 'Au' is the chemical name for gold (see the periodic table), and the 13 refers to the year the ride will debut, which will be 2013. Coincidentally, if we count every coaster Great America has had, both standing/running and removed, this will be the park's 13th coaster to come in.
