Charleston was founded in 1670 as Charles Towne in honor of King Charles II of England. It moved from its original settlement of Charles Towne Landing (Albemarle Point) to Oyster Point (the Ashley-Cooper penisula) in 1680 and the name was changed to Charleston in 1783.
