To clarify the above answer,there has been speculation amongst the fandom that Cranky Kong was the villain in Donkey Kong (Mario's first game).
Donkey Kong does play the role as villain in the Mario vs Donkey Kong series. However, he rarely appears in the Mario series other than the Mario Kart series, the Mario Party series and other Mario spin-off series. He never appears as a villain in any of those games.
