To add more details, Cranky Kong was the original DK in the arcade game and was Jumpman's(Mario's) first enemy. The current DK is an adult Donkey Kong jr and Mario's friend and rival, but not his enemy.

I haven't played for awhile so I am not entirely sure... When you get to the main menu you select the crown that is labeled kong battle, two selections will appear; a battle arena, and a normal kong match. After you select one of these a choose your character type screen appears. You should see Donkey kong on top and three other question marks. Plug in the same ammount of controllers as people who want to play. Press start on each controller, choose your kong, and let the battle begin!

To get banana medals, you need to accumulate at least 75 bananas with a specific kong. Since there are 5 kongs there are 5 medals on every level. In Hideout Helm, you need to beat the two challenges for each kong to release it.
