E. Gary Gygax was indeed a Jehovah's witness for several years. His wife encouraged him to convert, but Gary was disfellowshipped in the 1970's because his hair was "too long" (below the collar, as was the current fashion) and he was unable to quite cigarette smoking. He did try to quit cigarettes many times throughout his life, but was unsuccessful.
