Many diploma mills claim to be "accredited," but the accreditation is from a bogus, but official-sounding, agency they invented. Some diploma mills have slick websites, and a "dot-edu" Web address doesn't guarantee legitimacy

You can use the internet to check if a school is accredited by a legitimate organization at a new database of accredited academic institutions, posted by the U.S. Department of Education at the Related Link below.

To find out if an accrediting agency is legitimate, check the list of recognized national and regional accrediting agencies maintained by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation at the Related Link below.

Answer 1: Excel High School is Regionally Accredited by AdvancED, North Central Association CASI and Southern Association of Schools and Colleges CASI.

Answer 2: I'm sorry, but the first answer, while certainly accurate in spirit in the sense that, yes, Excel High School is "regionally" accredited by AdvancEd, it is not technically accurate, once one says that, to further list NCA and SACS.

First, though, let me be clear: Yes, Excel High School is accredited...

...that is, as long as we're talking about the one on 77th Street in Minneapolis. There's more than one Excel High School out there, folks. We really need, in our questions around here, to specify which one! But I know that whenever Excel is mentioned around here, the questioner usually means the one in Minneapolis, so that's the one we'll talk about, here.

So, then, yes, the Excel High School in Minneapolis is accredited. Even better, it's "regionaly" accredited which, at the high school level, is the very best kind of accreditation. So if that's all the questioner needs to know, then s/he can just stop reading, right now... though I'd advise continuing.

What makes any accreditation in the US worthwhile is the accreditor's being approved by the US Department of Education (USDE). At the high school level, the only USDE-approved accreditors that matter are the six big "regional" accreditors. Yes, there is such a thing as USDE-approved "national" accreditation, but at the high school level, "national" accreditation is simply not good enough. Most employers, colleges/universities and government will tend to only accept a high school diploma that's from a high school that's "regionally," and not "nationally" accredited.

It matters not whether the high school is of the "online" or "in-classroom" types. What matters is that the high school is "regionally" (and not "nationally") accredited. At the high school level, no other type of accreditation will do. Yes, "national" accreditation can be okay at the college level, but not at the high school level. Stick with "regional" accreditation only!

Also, please remember that fake high schools -- known as "diploma mills" -- will lie and claim that they're accredited, and then they'll make-up some fake accreditor name, and built it a web site, and then claim that it's their accreditor.

Regarding AdvancEd, and NCA and SACS: AdvancEd is a relatively new organization formed by the following three regional accreditors...

The North Central Association (NCA) Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI), which covers all K-12 (and post-secondary, too, but we're now just talking about K-12)"regional" accreditation in the following US states: Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, New Mexico, South Dakota, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

The Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC), which covers all K-12 (and post-secondary, too, but we're now just talking about K-12) "regional" accreditation in the following US states: Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and the state of Washington.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI), which covers all K-12 (and post-secondary, too, but we're now just talking about K-12) "regional" accreditation in the following US states: Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee and Texas.

Since Excel is in Minnesota, NCA would normally be its accreditor. However, since AdvancEd was created, its three founding regional accreditors have turned-over K-12 accreditation to AdvancEd, leaving the three accreditors to focus their energies on higher (post-secondary) education accreditation. For that reason, it's not really accurate to say that Excel is accredited by AdvancEd and NCA; and because Excel isn't in SACS's geographic territory, it's completely incorrect to add that Excel has been accredited by SACS.

However, that little technicality doesn't change that, bottom line, Excel High School is, indeed, "regionally" accredited. It's simply that one must now go to the AdvancEd website, and not the NCA website, to look-up the school and verify that it is, indeed, "regionally" accredited.

And anyone investigating any school should always, always, always independently verifiy any school's claim of accreditation by looking it up in the online database of whatever is its alleged accreditor; and should, further, always, always, always verify that whatever is its alleged accreditor is, in fact, USDE-approved! One should always, always, always do this to avoid being harmed by diploma mills!

Excel High School in Edina, (Minneapolis) Minnesota is Regionally accredited by AdvancED & NCA CASI. AdvancED is the parent organization of The North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI), Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC), and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI). Excel High School is a division of Excel College. Excel College is Registered with the Minnesota Office of Higher Education as a State approved Post-Secondary, Degree Granting Institution.

An accredited high school diploma is typically obtained by attending school online. These diplomas are from actual high schools and differ greatly from a GED certificate.
