Galileo Galilei was born in present day Italy, and lived (pretty much) his entire life there. By that definition, he would be "Italian."

Note, however, that, at that time, people did not identify with Italy as a nation, but with the region of their birth. Thus, Galilei might well have called himself a "Pisan" instead of an Italian. The concept of Italy as one nationality did not become accepted for a few centuries afterwards.
